The winners of a competition to name a series of new streets that are being built on the west side of Bridgwater, Somerset, have been announced.
The competition, which was run as part of Summerfield’s Haygrove Park development in Durleigh Road to provide 120 new homes in the town, attracted many entries from the year 7 pupils of Haygrove School.
The first prize for the street name, ‘Cherrywood Close’, was won by Marshall Smith and Sophie Young, both aged 11, who have each been awarded tickets to Brean Leisure Park. Second prize was awarded to Rebecca John and Luke Antoniou for ‘Haywater Avenue’ and the third prize was given to Harry Saunders and Ben Jackson for ‘Oakmear Road’, who won free entry tickets to the Odeon cinema and Hollywood Bowl, respectively, in Taunton.
The head of year 7 at Haygrove School, Mr Graham Ormerod commented on the competition:
“It is wonderful to think that new roads near to our school have been named by our students. Their ideas will contribute to the story of Bridgwater in years to come and they can feel proud that they have played a part in the town’s development.”
A further three street names were also selected for the development: Morgan Street, Autumn Lane and Acretree Close. Some more unusual names, which raised a smile from the judges but were ruled out, included Quality Street and Pink Unicorn Street!
Richard Nicol, divisional sales director for Summerfield, said:
“Naming streets is a key part of any new development and Summerfield received a fantastic response to the competition from the pupils of Haygrove School. They have done an excellent job in coming up with names that are in keeping with the area, and with our longer-term plans for shared open spaces and facilities on the site. It was extremely difficult to choose just six street names.
“I’m sure that the students will be excited to see things taking shape on the site near their school and we are delighted to be building these much-needed new homes for Bridgwater.”
Construction work on the Haygrove Park development began in August and the first show homes are expected to be open in spring 2015 as phase one of 19 four-bedroom homes nears completion. The anticipated starting price of a new home on one of the newly named streets will be £195,000.
